ABn-typemoleculesarewidelyusedasmonomersforthesynthesisofhyperbranchedpolymers.BecausethemutuallyreactiveAandBgroupsareliabletoself-oligomerize,themonomersaredifficulttoprepareandhandle.WehaveexploredthepossibilityofsynthesizinghyperbranchedpolymersusingAn-typemonomers,whicharestableandeasytoprepare,withsomebeingevencommerciallyavailable.Inparticular,wehavetriedtoopennewsyntheticroutestohyperbranchedpolymersusingdiynesandtriynesasmonomers.Wehavedevelopednewmetallic[TaBr5,Cp*Ru(PPh3)2Cl,etc.]andnonmetalliccatalystsystems(piperidine,DMF,etc.)andestablisheduniqueprocessesforacetylenepolymerizationsincludingpolycyclotrimerization,polycycloadditionandpolycoupling.Wehavesynthesizedavarietyofhyperbranchedpolymersincludingpolyarylenes,polytriazolesandpolydiyneswithhighmolecularweightsandexcellentsolubilityinhighyields.Thepolymersexhibitanarrayoffunctionalpropertiessuchassensitivephotoresponse,highthermalstability,largeopticalnonlinearity,highlightrefractivity,strongopticallimitingpowerandunusualaggregation-enhancedlightemission.Utilizingtheseuniqueproperties,polymernanotubes,fluorescentimages,honeycombpatterns,ferromagneticceramics,andnanosizedcatalystsaregeneratedandprepared.
