The broadened and red-shifted photoluminescence spectral emission of poly(N-vinylcarbazole) nanoparticles

Poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) nanoparticles have been prepared from tetrahydrofuran solutions with different concentrations via a reprecipitation method. The emission properties of the PVK nanoparticles are obviously different from those of the PVK solution and film. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the PVK nanoparticles become wide and red shift by comparison with those of the PVK solution and film. The repulsion between carbazole groups and poor solvent overcomes the steric hindrance of the carbazole groups, which is in favor of forming fully overlapping, sandwich-like configurations between neighboring carbazole groups in the PVK nanoparticles. It has been also found that the decay times of the excimers in the nanoparticles are shorter than those in the solution.
