This paper deals with the development and characterisation of CR-compounds filled with siliceous earth in order to enhance thermal as well as mechanical properties. Due to the unique mixture of corpuscular natural silica and lamellar kaolinite particles, siliceous earth can be used up to high filler contents while processibility of the compounds remains on an acceptable level. High filler content is needed to improve thermal conductivity but unfortunately,damping of the compounds is also increasing with increase of filler content. Since several years, silane-modified silica is successfully used in tyre tread compounds to reduce rolling resistance. A similar technology is applied in this work to reduce loss factor (tanδ) of siliceous earth filled CR-compounds and thus, heat build-up of the roller coatings. |
