Poly(lacticacid)(PLA),abiodegradablepolymerproducedfromrenewablebiomassresources9hasbeensuccessfullyelectrospuntoformmicrofibersornanofibersforbiomedical(e.g.,tissueengineering)andotherrelatedapplicationscl‘2].ThescaffoldsconsistingofelectrospunPLAfiberspossesseddesiredporousstructureandgoodbiocompatibilityc3].However,pureelectrospunPLAfibersnormallyhavepoormechanicalpropertiesandlowthermalandchemicalstability,whichlimittheirapplicationinmanyfields.Hence,enhancingthemechanicalandchemicalpropertiesofPLAfiberswithnano-materialsisdesirableformanyengineeringapplications.Inthiswork,fibrousnanocompositematsofcellulosenanocrystals(CNCs)incombinationwithPLAandmaleicanhydridegraftedPLA(MPLA)wereelectrospunfromasolventmixtureconsistingofN,N‘-dimethylformamideandchloroform.Morphological,mechanicalandthermalpropertieswerecharacterizedaswellasthein-vitrodegradationratesandhumanadultadiposederivedmesenchymalcellsviabilityasafunctionoffibercomposition.AveragediameteroftheelectrospunfibersdecreasedwiththeadditionofCNCinthematrix.MPLAnanocompositefibershadsmallerdiameterscomparedtoPLAcompositefibers.TensilestrengthandmodulusofthenanocompositeswereimprovedwiththeadditionofCNCsuptothe5wt%levelduetoCNCreinforcementandincreasedcomposite‘scrystallinity.ElongationofnanocompositesdecreasedsharplyatthehigherCNCcontentlevelduetotheaggregationofCNCsinmatrix.ThermalstabilityofPLAandMPLAwasimprovedfornanocompositeswithsmallerCNCcontents.Resultsofin-vitrodegradationandcellviabilityassasysindicatedthatMPLAnanocompositeshadexcellentbiodegradabilityandbiocompatibility.
