Inthispaper,usingmulti-walledcarbonnanotubes(MWNTs)assurfacemodifiers,themodifiedultrahighmolecularweightpolyethylene(UHMWPE)fibersweremadeafterthegelfiberextractedwiththeMWNTs/xylenecompoundextractingagentandfollowedbydryingandmulti-stagehotdrawing.ThesurfacemorphologicalstructureandthermalpropertiesofpureUHMWPEfiberandMWNTs/UHMWPEfiberswerecharacterizedwithscanningelectronmicroscope(SEM),thermogravimetry(TG)analysisanddifferentialscanningcalorimeter(DSC).ThemechanicalandadhesivepropertiesofMWNTs/UHMWPEfibersweremeasuredandcomparedwithpureUHMWPEfiber.TheresultsshowedthattheMWNTswereintroducedintothesurfaceofUHMWPEfiberaftertheextractingtreatment.Thefiber’smeltingtemperatureanditsdecomposingtemperatureat5%weightlossincreasedfrom144.6℃to144.8℃and430.5℃to450.1℃,respectively.ThetensilestrengthofthefiberincreasedalittleafterMWNTsmodification,theinterfacialshearstrength(IFSS)betweenthemodifiedfiberandepoxymatrixincreasedby48.3%.
