Oneofthemajorconcernsindesignofaircraftcompositestructuresistheimpactondamageresistance,especiallyduetolow-velocityimpact.Theinterleaf-tougheningconcepthasbeensuccessfullydevelopedtoincreasethedamageresistancebyusingthermoplasticfilmsortextileveils.However,asthecompositesaretoughenedandtheiruseincreasesinaircraftstructures,therecomestheneedfortheElectroMagneticInterference(EMI)shieldingandLightningStrikeProtection(LSP),becausethematerialsareelectricallyisolated.Wenewlyhavedevelopedaninnovativeconcepttosimultaneouslyimprovetheelectricconductivityandtheimpactdamageresistanceofthecarbon-fiberreinforcedcompositeforaircraftapplicationcl].Byapplyingtheinterlayer-tougheningtechnologyonthesecomposites,electricallyfunction-addedinterleafmaterialsaredeveloped,whichononehandprovidessignificanttougheningefficiency,andontheotherhand,itfunctionsasatoughandflexibleconductorthroughitssurfaceloadingofnano-sizeelectricalconductivefillers.Inthistalk,ahighlyelectricalconductiveandhighlytoughenedcarbon-fibercompositewillbepresentedanditspotentialwillbedemonstratedforEMIshieldingandLSPofaircraft.Thekeycomponentfortheelectricalfunction-integrationistheuseofinterleaffilmsorveilssurface-loadedwithAgNWs.Theinterleaf,ononehand,isaprovenconceptfortoughening;ontheotherhand,itfunctionsasamechanicalcarrierforsurface-loadingAgNWs.Byinterleavingthematerialintothecarbonfiberlaminates,boththefracturetoughnessandelectricalconductivityhavebeenimprovedsimultaneously.Itseemsreasonabletoexpectthat,thistechnologycouldpotentiallyofferthetraditionalstructuralcompositelaminatesmuchuniquefunctionintegrationsuchasthermalconductivity,activedampingproperties,sensingpropertiesandfireretardantproperties,etc.Furtherinvestigationsareunderway.
