We report the robust icephobic/anti-icing property that is found on a micro/nanostructured surface (MN-surface) inspired by the MN feature on butterfly wings. The design integrates the methods of machine processing and crystal growth. Thus the MN-surface is composed of microratchets combined with nanohairs
on a metal substrate. It is found that the MN-surface herein has a robust icephobic/anti-icing property which is much better than that of nanostructured surfaces (N-surfaces), and far better than microstructured surfaces (M-surfaces) and smooth surfaces without any structure (S-surfaces). An excellent icephobic/
anti-icing property is achieved on MN-surfaces, lasting for a long delay time of ∼ 7000 s for ice formation. Moreover, excellent properties, such as low adhesion strength, preferable anti-icing robustness etc., appear on MN-surfaces at subzero temperature, which seem to be more robust than that of other surfaces reported previously. The mechanism is elucidated by integrating both laws of wettability and thermodynamics. This study is signifi cant to design anti-icing, anti-frosting, or anti-fogging surfaces for practical applications in frosty or constantly changing environments.
