Theion-exchangemembrane,Nafion,remainsasthebenchmarkforamajorityofresearchanddevelopmentinIPMCtechnology.Inthisresearch,weemployedanovelionomernamedbysulfonatedpoly(styrene-ran-ethylene)(SPSE)thatiscrosslinkedbyUVirradiation.ThesulfonicacidgroupswerestableduringtheUVirradiationcrosslinkingprocess.Wateruptake,ionexchangecapacity,andprotonconductivityarecharacterizedforbothpureSPSEandcrosslinkedSPSEmembrane.ThebendingresponsesofSPSEactuatorsunderbothdirectcurrent(DC)andalternatingcurrent(AC)excitationswereinvestigated.Thevoltage-currentbehaviorsoftheactuatorsunderACexcitationsarealsomeasured.ResultsshowedthecrosslinkedSPSEactuatorshavebetterelectromechanicalperformancethanthatofpureSPSEactuatorwithregardtotipdisplacementasanovelsmartmaterial.
