Thepotentialoftranslatingthesuperbmechanicalandphysicalpropertiesofindividualcarbonnanotubes(CNTs)fromthenano-scaletothemacro-scaleofcontinuousfibersisfascinatingandhasdrivenconsiderableresearchinterestinthepastdecadecl,2].Fromtheviewpointofreinforcementsforfibercomposites,thepotentialofusingCNTsinacontinuousformwouldenabletheiradaptationtomanywell-developedcompositesprocessing,characterizationandmicromechanicsmethodologies.EventhoughveryhighstrengthsandmoduliforCNTfiberhavebeenreportedintheliterature,theprocessingofhighperformanceCNTfiberswithconsistent,reproduciblequalityhasstilleludedourreach.Thispresentationisintendedtointroduceouron-goingresearch,theaimsofwhicharetwo-fold.First,aconcertedefforthasbeenmadetoassessthestatusofCNTfibertechnologybyexaminingfibersfromvarioussourcesbasedondifferentprocessingmethods.Researchresultsincharacterizingthetensile,compressive,torsion,aswellaselectromechanicalbehaviorsofCNTfiberswillbereportedc3-5].Throughourcharacterizationstudies,amorecomprehensiveknowledge-baseofCNTfiberhasemerged.Thisresearchhasfueledthequestion,"HowdoCNTfibersgaintheirstrength?".Therefore,oursecondinitiativeisfocusedonidentifyingkeycontributingfactorsaffectingthemechanicalpropertiesofCNTfibers.Preliminaryresearchresultsinmodelingtheinfluenceofthesefactors,suchasCNTlength,CNTentanglement,intertubeinteractions,aswellasfibertwistangle,willbereported.ThecombinedexperimentalandanalyticaleffortaimstoidentifytheoptimaldesignofCNTfibersforhighperformancecompositeapplicationsc6].
