Nanoscalematerialshavebeenemployedintointerphaseofcompositesinordertoimplementmultiplefunctions,suchasmechanical,electrical,hydrothermalandchemical.Multi-walledcarbonnanotubes(CNTs)weredepositedontoelectricallyinsulatingglassfibresurfaces,leadingtotheformationofsemiconductingCNTs-glassfibresandinturnmultifunctionalfibre/polymerinterphases.First,thesemiconductingCNTs-glassfibredemonstratedahighsensitivitytowardsstrainsbysimultaneousdeterminationofelectricalresistanceundertensileloading,whichhighlightsapotentialasin-situmicrosensorinmaterials.Second,theinterfacialshearstrengthofsinglefibrecompositesexhibitedmorethan30%improvement.Third,anin-situstrainsensorwasmanufacturedtoreal-timemonitorthemicrocrackincompositesinsteadofexternalsensors.Atthesametime,thein-situstrainsensorshowedauniqueabilityofpredictingtheultimatefracturepriortoitsoccurrence.Obviously,themulti-individualfibrecompositeimprovestheearlywarningcapabilityandsensitivity.Monitoringtheresistancevariationofthesinglefibrecompositewasconductedundercyclicloadingwithprogressivelyincreasingthestrainpeaksinordertofurtherinvestigatetheresponseofin-situsensortotheinterphasedamageprocess.Utilizingthemicrocrackassociatedwithfibrebreakage,anewelectromechanicalswitchwasmadeandthe"junction-break"mechanismwasproposedtocharacterizetheswitch.Finally,theCNTs-glassfibrewasusedasanin-situphysical-chemicalsensortocharacterizetheprocessesofcuringorcrystallizationofpolymersthroughmonitoringthelowmobilityofchargecarriersininsulativematerials.Theglasstransitionwasinterpretedbytheresistancemeasurement.
