Ithasbeenshownthatnano-scalecellulosefibershavemuchgreaterpotentialtoimprovemechanicalandphysicalpropertiesinpolymercompositesthanmicro-scalecellulosefiberscl,2].Theobjectiveofthisstudywastoextractthenano-scalecellulosefiberfromwastenewspaperasacellulose-rich,bio-basedwastematerial.Thewastenewspaperwastreatedbothchemicallyandphysicallyinordertoextractcrystallinecellulosenanofiber.Acidhydrolysisandmechanicalextractiontreatmentsresultedincrystallinecellulosenanofiberwithdiametermostlyranging10-40nm.Thereinforcingeffectofobtainedcrystallinecellulosenanofiberwasalsoinvestigatedbycomposingwithbiodegradableresin.Commerciallyavailablecellulosenanofiberwasalsousedasreferencetothenewspapercrystallinecellulosenanofiber.Theresultsshowedtheincreaseinmechanicalpropertiesofreinforcedcompositesforbothcomposites.However,commercialcellulosenanofiber-reinforcedcompositesshowedgreaterenhancementinmechanicalpropertiesthannewspapercrystallinecellulosenanofiberreinforcedcomposites.Itcanbeseenthatthewastenewspapercanbeusedasacellulose-richrawmaterialforfabricatingcellulosenanofiber,andtheextractedcellulosenanofiberhasapotentialtoreinforcebiodegradablepolymer.
