Anopticalsensorforhighlysensitiveandselectivedeterminationoftoxicmetalionsisbeneficialtowastewaterpurificationandfoodsafety.Inthiswork,astableoptodemembranefortherapiddeterminationofZincions,basedonafluorescentmetal-ligandcomplexincorporatedinPolyvinylalcohol(PVA),isproposed.ThemembraneconsistedofPVAandfluorescentligands8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonicacid(8HQS)011whichselectivelyreadZinc(II)ions.Itwasdemonstratedthatthemembraneexhibitedstrongfluorescencewhenthe8HQSligandinthemembranecomplexedwiththeexteriorZinc(II)ions,andtheliganditselfisverypoorlyemissive.Asignificantchangeinfluorescenceintensitycouldbeinstantaneouslyvisualized,inresponsetotheamountofZincionscomplexedatambienttemperature,undertheexposureofUVlight.Severalparametersofmembraneswerestudiedandoptimized.ThevisualdetectionlimitwasIX10-6mol.L-l.Inaddition,thefilmsensoralsoshowedgoodselectivityovercommonmetalions.Theoptodemembranedevelopedwaseasilyprepared,stable,andsimpleforrapidscreeningofZincions.ItwassuccessfullyusedforthedeterminationofZinc(II)ionsinwatersampleswithsatisfactoryresults.
