Moistwounddressingsbasedonthecarboxymethylcelluloseareveryimportanttoclinicalpractice.Cellulosefiberandtextilecarboxymethylatedwithlowsubstitutiondegreeshowgoodwaterabsorbencyandmoistureretentiveness,whichcanbeusedforwoundtherapy.Inthisstudy,carboxymethylcottonknittedfabrics(CM-CKFs)werepreparedbybeingtreatedwithNaOHandCICH2COONaindifferentsolvents:water,ethanol-water(v/v:3/1),isopropanol-water(v/v:3/1)underthesameexperimentalconditions.EffectsofsolventpolarityonthestructureandphysicalpropertiesofCM-CKFswerediscussed.Asthesolventpolarityreduced,thesubstitutiondegree(0.13,0.50,0.65)andcrystallinityindexofCM-CKFsdecreased,andtherewasappreciablemcreaseinfiberdiametershowedbyscanningelectronmicroscopeimages.Thewaterabsorbencyofsamplestreatedinwater,ethanol-water(v/v:3/1),isopropanol-water(v/v:3/1)werel.86,6.95and14.86g/g,respectively.Correspondingly,thebreakingstrengthoftheCM-CKFsincreasedslightly,whiletheirbreakingelongationgraduallydecreased.Inaddition,thesamplestreatedinmixedsolventshadgoodblockingperformance.Thus,theefficiencyofcarboxymethylationreactionwasincreasedasthesolventpolaritydecreased.TheCM-CKFscouldbeusedasgoodabsorbingmaterialsforthepreparationofhighperformancewounddressings.
