Differentformulationsweredesignedtoevaluatetheeffectoftheorganicallymodifiedmontmorillonite(OMMT)inpolystrenecontaininganovelintumescentflameretardant,poly(4,4-diaminodiphenylmethanespirocyclicpentaerythritolbisphosphonate)(PDSPB).Resultsoftransmissionelectronmicroscopy(TEM)revealthatOMMTdispersedinPDSPBphase.Investigationofthermogravimetricanalysis(TGA)revealsthatthethermalstabilityofPSresinhavenoobviouschangewiththeadditionofPDSPBandOMMT,buttheresidueincreases.Fromtheresultsofconecalorimeter,itwasobservedthattherearetwostepsduringcombustion.AsynergisticeffectoccurredinStep2,inwhichthePHRRisreducedbyabout40%and61%incomparisonwiththepurePS.Amodelofcombustionactionwasdeveloped.Atthebeginningofcombustion,thePDSPBphasedeformedslightly,thelayeredstructureofOMMTactasabarrierandthuslimitthereleaseofphosphoricacidandnonflammablegasproducedbyPDSPB.Atthesametime,OMMTlimitedinPDSPBphasecannoteffectivelyrestraintheevolutionofflammablevolatilesandtheingressofoxygentothePSphase.Therefore,bothofPDSPBandOMMTcouldnotprotectthepolymermatrixfromcombustion.Withtheextendingofcombustiontime,thePDSPBmeltintofluid,whichmakestheOMMTdispersedinPDSPBtendtocoveringthesurfaceofthenanocomposites.Thus,thebarriercharacterofthelayeredclaywasefficientlyimproved.Ontheotherhands,thePDSPBcanreducetheflammabilitymoreefficientlyasthehomogeneousdistributionofOMMT.Therefore,flameretardancyofthenanocompositesissignificantlyimproved.
