Synergyinflameretardancyofrigidpolyurethanefoamsbetweenphosphorus-basedflameretardant(aluminiumphosphinate)andlayeredsilicateshasbeeninvestigated.Weusedpristinemontmorilloniteaswellasammoniummodifiedclay(commerciallyavailable)anddiphosphoniummodifiedclay,whichwassynthesisedbytheintercalationofthequaternarydiphosphoniumsalt.ThemorphologyofthefoamswerecharacterisedthroughSEM(ScanningElectronMicroscopy)andX-Raydiffraction(XRD),whilethermalpropertieswerecharacterisedbythermo-gravimetricanalyses(TGA),oxygenindextest(LOI)andconecalorimeter(CC).Themorphologicalcharacterisationshowedthatpristineanddiphosphoniummodifiedclaysarealmostslightlyintercalated,whileammoniummodifiedoneisverywelldispersed.Theresultsofthermalcharacterisationshowedthatinpresenceofphosphinateenhancementsofoxygenindex,firebehaviour(measuredbyconecalorimeter)andthermalstabilityhavebeenachieved.Phosphinateisthereforeanefficientflameretardantforpolyurethanefoamsanditsflameretardancyactiontakesplaceinbothcondensedandgasphases.Pristineandammoniummodifiedlayeredsilicatebringtosomeenhancementsofthermalstabilitywhilehavenoimportanteffectindecreasingpeakheatreleaserate(PHRR)andtotalheatevolved(THE)whenusedinconjunctionwithphosphinate;theirmainadvantageisrelatedtotheenhancementofcompactnessofthecharlayerformed.Diphosphoniumclayisinsteadeffectiveinfurtherimprovingthefirebehaviourofthefoamsbecauseoftheflameretardancyactionofphosphonium:bothPHRRandTHEweredecreased.Theanalysisofconecalorimeterdatashowedthatclaysactthroughphysicaleffectconstitutingabarrieratthesurfacewhichiseffectiveinpreventingorloweringdownthediffusionofvolatilesandoxygen,whilephosphinateandphosphoniumaremoreeffectiveowingtotheircombinedactioninbothcondensedandgasphase.
