Recentlyphosphorousbasedfireretardantsandnanoparticlesarepromotedasalternativestohalogenatedfireretardantstoreducetoxicologicaldamagetotheenvironment.Toassessthecondensedphaseduringpyrolysis,thisstudypresentsthermal(byTGAinnitrogen)andcondensedphaseanalysisoftheresidue(byFTIR-ATR)ofPBTmodifiedbyaphosphinateFRand/ornanoparticles(sepiolite).ThethermalanalysisshowsthatthenanoparticlesdonotchangethepyrolysiskineticsofPBTwhereasthephosphinateFRdoes.ThecondensedphaseanalysisshowsthatboththephosphinateFRandthenanoparticleschangethestructureofcharcomparedwithpurePBT.IncontrasttothepurepolymerwhichleavesacharconsistingofoligomericcomponentsofPBT,thefireretardedpolymer(byphosphinateand/ornanoparticles)leavesacharconsistingofpolycyclicaromatichydrocarbons(PAH).ThePAHstructureofthecharisexpectedtomakethecharstrongerandcapabletowithstanderosioninfullscalefiretests.Thisobservationisverifiedfromthestrengthanalysisofthecharresidueinintermediatescaleflammabilityexperimentssuchasthoseintheconecalorimeter,wherecharisformedbehindtheflamesintheabsenceofoxygen.
