Coatingsbasedonnanosolsandinorganic-organichybridpolymersfromsol-gelprocesswasappliedtofabricatesuperhydrophobicsurfacesoncottonfabrics.Polyacidicspacers,i.e.succinicacid,adipicacidand1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylicacid,formedchemicalbondswithbothcottonfabricandsilicasolthroughtheformationofesterbondonthesurfaceofcottonfabrics.Theesterifiedcottonfabricsaswellasnativecottonwerethenprocessedwithhydrophobicfinishingbysol-gelhydrophobictreatment,whichexhibitedgoodhydrophobicitywiththecontactangleslargerthan140°.However,thewashingdurabilityofesterifedcottonfabricswashigherthanthatofnativecotton.Amongallesterifiedsamples,1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylicacidmodifiedcottonshowedthebestdurability,whosecontactanglestillremainsabove130°evenafter30timeswashing.Itcouldbeconcludedthattheesterificationstrengthenstheinteractionbetweencottonfabricandsilicasol,andconsequentlyimprovesthedurabilityofhydrophobicity.
