Ashapememorypolymer(SMP)isanactivelymovingpolymer,whichrecoversitsoriginalshapefromapreviouslyprogrammed,temporaryshapeuponanexternalstimulus.Thetemporaryshapecanbeachievedbymechanicalloadinginpresenceoftheexternalstimulusandfixedbyremovingorchangingthisstimulusthatisusuallythetemperature.Theshapememoryeffectisinducedwhenthematerialreachesacriticaltemperature,calledtransformationtemperature(TUam).Thisagreeswiththeglasstransitiontemperature(Tg)forcrosslinkedthermosets,suchasepoxyresins(EP).SMPsmayhavemanyadvantages,suchaseasyprocessability,lowcost,lightweight,largedeformability,biocompatibility,biodegradability,etc.comparedwithshapememoryalloys.However,SMPshavesomelimitations,fromwhichlowrecoverystressisthemostimportantproblemwithrespecttopotentialapplications.IncreasingthelowrecoverystressofSMPsisinthefocusofresearchinterestnowadays.TheshapememorycharacteristicsofEPcompositescontainingdifferentreinforcements(coveringbothnano-scaledandmicron-scaledversions)wereassessedinthreepointbendingmodeinadynamic-mechanicalanalysisdeviceandcomparedtothoseoftheparentEP.Fromunconstrainedtests,theshapefixityandrecoveryratiosandtherecoveryrate,whereasfromconstrainedteststherecoverystressweredetermined.Effectsoftype,amountandpositioningofthereinforcementsontheshapememorycharacteristicsoftheEPcompositesweresummarizedandguidelinesfortheirfurtherdevelopmentwereoutlined.
