Benefitingfromtheirhighlybranchedarchitecture,hyperbranchedpolymershaveattractedmuchattentioninrecentyears.Here,severaldifferentapproaches,suchasA2+BB2’polycondensation,ring-openingpolymerization,proton-transferpolymerizationandhybridpolymerization,havebeenusedtopreparefunctionalhyperbranchedpolymers.Thearchitecturesandpropertiesofhyperbranchedpolymerscanbesuccessfullycontrolledbychangingvariousexperimentalparameters,includingthereactiontemperature,themixingsolventandthecatalystconcentration.Thesupramolecularinteractionhasalsobeenintroducedtocontrolthearchitectureofpolymerchains.Importantly,somenovelstimuli-responsivepolymers,suchasthethermo-,pH-,orthermo/pH/dual-responsivehyperbranchedpolymers,aresynthesized.Finally,theapplicationofthesefunctionalhyperbranchedpolymersinbioscience,especiallyforthegenetransfectionanddrugdelivery,hasbeenbrieflydiscussed.Thestructureoffunctionalhyperbranchedpolymersisdesignedtobemultifunctionalbyequippingwithbiodegradability,nontoxicity,stimuli-responsiveability,highlybranchedcompactarchitecture,andabundantfunctionalend-groups,whichmakesthefunctionalhyperbranchedpolymersaspromisingcarriersindrugdeliveryandgenetransfection.
