NanosizedTiO2waspreparedusingTetrabutyltitanateasaprecursorbysol-gelprocess.Lightweight100%cottonfabricwassuccessfullymodifiedbytheas-obtainednanosizedTiO2coatingtoimparthighultraviolet(UV)shieldingpropertytothefabricsurface.CottonfabricsweretreatedbydippingtheminnanosizedTiO2dispersionsolutionandultrasonic-treatingatroomtemperaturefor15min,dryingat80℃for6minandcuringat150℃for3min.Scanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM)showedtheformationofnanosizedTiO2particlesorclustersonthefibersurface.ExcellentUV-shieldingpropertywasobtainedwithalltreatedfabrics.IncreasingtitaniacontentinthedispersionsolutionledtoincreasedUV-shieldingeffect,whichcouldbeattributedtotheincreaseoftherefractiveindexofthenanosizedTiO2particlesonthefabricsurface.Goodwashingdurabilitywasobtained,whichindicatedagoodadhesionbetweenthecoatingandthefabricsurface.
